What We Use
This is just a list of things we use and would highly recommend using if you are searching for the right cage, feed, bedding etc. for your piggy!
Feed
We use Blue Seal Furry Friends Guinea Pig Pellets.
Some breeders say it's the best feed to use. It's plain pellets, it does not have colorful treats or pumpkin seeds in it Those kinds of feed you want to stay away from cause they can be very unhealthy. I buy a 25lb. bag of it from Tractor Supply Co. For only $11.00. We mix in Quaker Old Fashioned Rolled Oats, Calf Manna, and occasionally Flax Seed to the Blue Seal. Flax Seed improves the guinea pigs coat condition (it makes it shinier). Calf Manna is just a supplement I stick in there as a treat. It will fatten them up if you give to much so make sure if you use it, don't give them a lot in the feed. |
Hay
We use Orchard Grass hay or Timothy hay. Whenever we can find a nice bale of it.
You can find bales of Timothy or Orchard grass hay at farm co-ops or maybe a local farm will let you buy one. Orchard grass hay should be a green, sweet smelling grass(just be careful if you buy a bale, look out for stickers in them) A bale of Timothy should be a soft green to grey/brown green in color. Try to find a quality bale that is not musty smelling or has mold on it, this kind might hurt your guinea pig. |
Bedding
We use Fine Pine Shavings from Tractor Supply Co. And to help make cages easier to clean, I put Pine Pellets under the bedding. They absorb the pee and make the cages much more easier to clean. I sprinkle the pellets on the bottom of the cage and then put about 1 1/2 inch of bedding over the pellets. |
Water Bottles
We use these water bottles.
<-- The brand is Home Rig House. It is a 32 oz. water bottle. I get them from Tractor Supply Co. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is another bottle we use for pigs that are by themselves and don't get along with other pigs. The brand is LM Animal Farms. It's only an 8 oz bottle. I get these from Tractor Supply Co. also. |
Cages
We use these cages to house our piggies in. I can hold 2 medium sized pigs in one.
They are easy to put together and easy to clean. The size of the cages is 30"L x 18"W x 16"H. I get them for $25 at an online store called Pet Mountain. Usually you can get them from Petsmart for almost $40 But thanks to a friend, she showed me that site and I will be buying my cages from there from now on. If you would like to see the site, I have it listed on my links page. |
